A focus on the city regeneration plans and public transport proposals, with Cardiff Central Square at its heart, provides development opportunity for a new civic gesture. The site opens up to the central square along its east and north boundaries.
The public square is to extend into the topography of the built form. A green terraced landscape with edges defined by public pedestrian movement is to be created, into which a series of sculpted volumes will be placed.
A new civic space is activated. The arrival to the city from Cardiff Central station is enhanced by the framing of views and routes to the river and national stadium with new built form and social uses. A 1200 seat auditorium, 1200 seat banqueting facility and 1400 person exhibition space are proposed and are served by two on site hotels (350 keys total). The uses are positioned partially below ground, creating a sub-terrain service zone and an above ground public topography rising up and terminating at the sculpted volume of the auditorium.
